To educate students on disabilities, UW-Eau Claire will host Disabilities Awareness Week starting today. Events are aimed at educating faculty and students about the different kinds of disabilities and give them a chance to experience what being disabled is like.
“I think it is really great that our school is having a disability awareness week,” freshman Michelle Schneider said. “It’s a good way of making students realize what students with disabilities go through.”
More than 300 students have a disability, said junior Kara Anderson from the services for students with disabilities office.
Organizations sponsoring the events for the week include UW-Eau Claire Professional Development Program, Student Support Services, Services for Students with Disabilities, Counseling Services and Student Senate.
There will be an informational booth in the East Lobby of Davies Center all week that will have the information for the events going on each day, said Alice Bayerl, student services coordinator for students with disabilities.
Each day there will be different events focusing on a specific type of disability. Throughout the week speakers will discuss learning, physical, sensory, psychological and medical disabilities.
