Student Senate passed two constitutions at its Monday meeting making Alpha Zeta Lambda and Women in Information Technology Systems UW-Eau Claire’s newest organizations.
Alpha Zeta Lambda, a chapter of its national affiliate Pheta Alpha Kappa, is an honor society for religious studies majors and minors. Hundreds of universities have the society, but UW-Eau Claire is the second participating school in Wisconsin, said sophomore Sarah Bolstad, director of the organizations commission. UW-Madison was the first.
For a student to be inducted into Alpha Zeta Lambda, he or she must be at least three semesters into school, have at least 12 credits in religious or theological studies, have a 3.5 GPA in those courses or a total GPA of 3.0 in his or her program.
WITS is an organization to support women in information technology fields, such as management information systems and computer science.
“There tends to be a low number of women in computer science,” said Janet Quarderer, WITS adviser and a computer science lecturer. “So (WITS) is just to encourage those women and give them support.”
She estimated the group will meet every other week.
“They want to have women speakers who have worked in the business world share how they got involved in a male-dominated world,” Bolstad said.
Alpha Zeta Lambda and WITS are independent organizations, but Bolstad said Senate sent them letters offering assistance if needed.
“A big goal for us is to be intermediary between Senate and the organizations and building different coalitions between the Student Senate commissions and the university organizations,” Bolstad said.
