SRI earns Senate approval for future Davies spot

Restating its support of Student Radio Initiative, Student Senate unanimously passed a resolution Monday requesting the Davies Center expansion committee give the station space in the building when construction is completed.

SRI received similar support when Senate approved a resolution requesting space for the station two years ago, Senate Vice President Matt Flaten said Tuesday.

“It can’t hurt to remind them,” said Flaten, a current SRI member who co-wrote the resolution with SRI Advertising Director and on-campus Senator Bridget Dillon.

SRI, formed by Senate in 1997, is also known as WSRI on 105.1 Cable FM and online. Flaten said he wants to move from Higher Ground on upper campus to Davies.

When students voted on the Davies expansion referendum in March 2000, SRI was one of the potential tenants included in a 41,500 square-foot expansion of Davies.

Flaten said he thought it was important to re-affirm the Senate’s stance because the expansion committee is meeting more often now.

Junior Andy Oettinger, a member of the expansion committee, said consultants were on campus Tuesday and Wednesday evaluating the building and collecting student input.

“It’s still so early we’re not sure what the scope of (the expansion) could be,” Oettinger said.

No group will have a guaranteed space in the new Davies, he said, until the consultants’ final report is done and the committee writes the complete plan for the renovation.

Yet, the committee will take Senate’s recent resolution seriously, Oettinger said.

“We accept things like that as the voice of the students,” said Oettinger, who later added there are many people who want space in the new facility.

Individual groups probably could not get the same resolution from Senate, Flaten said, because they are not as broad of a program for students.
