    Softball ‘under the weather’

If the softball team hopes to consistently get out on the diamond, it might want to schedule another trip to California.

The Blugolds played 10 games in five days during spring break. They’ve played two games in 12 days since returning from the Golden State.

The postponement of Wednesday’s twin bill against UW-La Crosse at Gelein Field in Carson Park marked the fifth time in eight days that a game or doubleheader has been postponed or canceled due to inclement weather.

“It gets to be kind of irritating after a while but we can’t control it,” said junior pitcher Jessie Sharpe. The doubleheader with La Crosse was rescheduled to April 17.

The ‘Golds were supposed to play two games Monday at UW-Stout that were originally scheduled for April 3. But Stout’s field wasn’t ready, so the games are now slated for April 23.

Gelein Field isn’t in the best shape either. Coach Leslie Huntington said the field was soft when the team practiced there Monday.

“The edges of the infield were very wet,” Huntington said. “When you’d step on it, you’d sink quite a bit.”

However, Tuesday’s warmer and drier weather improved the field’s condition enough for a high school game to be played there.

“With everything scheduled so close together, a bad week can wipe out a lot of stuff,” Sports Information Director Tim Petermann said. “I’m getting used to writing these postponement releases.”

Senior Tracy Steffens, first base, said she can’t remember a season that’s began this crazy.

“This is by far the worst year,” she said. “But once we get rolling it’ll be game, game, game instead of game, practice, practice.”

With the La Crosse game now set for April 17, the Blugolds could have a wild stretch where they play all of their home games this season from April 16-21.
