Coming off a first place win Sept. 24 in the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Collegiate Tournament, the men’s golf team came in ninth out of 21 in the Twin Cities Classic held last weekend.
The Twin Cities Classic was held over three different courses from Saturday through Monday.
The Blugolds opened on Saturday with a score of 310 at The Links at Norfolk (Ramsey, Minn.) and bettered its score by one stroke on Sunday, with a 309 at Elk River (Minn.) Country Club. This put the Blugolds in 10th place at the end of day two.
Coach Todd Oehrlein said that he expected better of the team.
On the last day of the tournament, which took place at Midland Hills Golf Club in Minneapolis, the Blugolds turned in the second best score of the day.
The team’s score of 301 put it in second place for Monday, within five strokes of Gustavus Adolphus’ Gold team’s score of 296.
Oehrlein said that despite inconsistency in the beginning, the last day was a good round and the men played better.
Blugold junior Mark Christensen, with a total score of 220, tied for third place of the top 25 individual scores.
“Ninth out of 21 teams, teams that we beat before, was pretty disappointing as a team, but we can come back from that,” Christensen said.
He also said that he was happy to do his best the individual aspect of the game doesn’t mean as much as how they play as a team.
Junior Andy Smith also finished in the top 25. He tied for 24th with a total score of 230.
The team will play in the 54-hole Nebraska Wesleyan Fall Preview held Oct. 7-9. Christensen said that the team expects to come back strong, and hopes to leave its ninth place finish in the past and continue where it left off with the first place finish in the Frank Wrigglesworth meet.
The Blugolds also will participate in the Gordin Collegiate on Oct. 14-15.
