Despite weather conditions, the women’s track team opened its outdoor season with strong individual performances Saturday at Simpson field.
Although no team scores were kept at the Blugold OpenInvite, the Blugolds gave many solid performances.
“I looked at the times and I was really impressed, considering the bad conditions,” coach Tracy Yengo said.
Freshmen sprinters Kallie Krueger and Mary Dettwiler finished first and second to lead all runners in the 400-meter run.
“We wanted to get a good, hard workout in,” Krueger said. “The event went well for me. Luckily it had stopped snowing by the time I ran.”
The Blugolds also finished well in the field events, capturing the top three spots in the shot put.
Freshman Brooke Wozniak led all shot putters with a throw of 12.21 meters. Freshmen Jessica Beaulieu and Kate Miller rounded off the top three finishers.
“We placed very strong one through three in the event,” Wozniak said. “Given the conditions that we were faced with, we’re more than happy with our performances.”
Beaulieu captured another second place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.32 meters. Sophomores Anna Nelson and Jenny Puente threw well enough to capture the third and fourth spots.
Freshman Kay Mikolajczak and junior Kathy Thompson finished second and third in the long jump. Mikolajczak jumped 4.55 meters to Thompson’s 4.46 meters.
Mikolajczak was one of several additions to the team since the beginning of the outdoor season.
“We’ve had some girls come over from basketball, and they did well for us,” Yengo said. “They will definitely be impact people.”
Thompson, coming off a trip to nationals for the indoor season, finished second in the javelin throw with a throw of 27.09 meters. Beaulieu threw 19.37 meters and claimed a sixth-place finish in the event after just one day of practice for the event.
“We dealt with some slippery conditions during our throwing events,” Beaulieu said.
Thompson also threw the shot put 9.81 meters, which was good enough for her to place sixth.
“Kathy is experienced and she will help people improve in their events,” Beaulieu said. “She’s the team leader and is also a big supporter of the team.”
