I love reading as much as the next guy, and I get excited when my favorite books are adapted for the screen. However, one particular author has had a few too many of her books turned into films.
(Suzanne Collins, this could never be you. Keep up the fantastic work, queen.)
No, I am talking about the viral TikTok author Colleen Hoover. With over 24 novels and novellas under her belt, Hoover has had many of her books become extremely popular. While I am happy her books helped many people get into reading, I still cannot stand this woman’s work.
There are a number of reasons why I dislike her, moving beyond who she is as a person and also regarding her writing. I have read exactly one of her books, “Ugly Love,” and that was enough of her writing for me.
Personally, I do not want to read about step-siblings turned teen parents laughing at their newborn son’s big … Well, if you know, you know.
That was not one of Hoover’s books that was adapted, with the first being a glorified tale of domestic abuse, “It Ends with Us.” This film had its own drama outside of the book it came from, which I will not be speaking on.
On Oct. 24, Hoover’s second film adaptation, “Regretting You,” was released in theaters. The film should have been good, starring the iconic McKenna Grace and Dave Franco, but the reviews I’ve seen on TikTok are not as glowing as I thought they would be.
Before the movie came out, I was debating putting aside my morals and going to see the film, knowing Grace and Franco would kill their roles. But with the reviews, my already small desire to see the film shrank even more.
Going to see the film would mean supporting Hoover, and besides her bad writing, I also don’t want to support a woman who called her son’s victim untruthful.
Shockingly, Hoover has a third movie adaptation coming out on March 13, 2026, called “Reminders of Him.” The film stars “Outer Banks” actor Rudy Pankow.
Fans criticized the recent trailer, saying it gave too much of the film away and basically showed the entire movie.
This is yet another film I will not be watching — not only because of Hoover but also because it looks like a sad film, and I’m still upset about the last one I watched, cough, “We Live in Time,” cough.
Supposedly, Hoover also has a fourth adaptation coming out next October for her popular book “Verity.” To be short, no. Just no.
Not only does Hoover have movie deal after movie deal, but she also has more books coming out, including her recent announcement of “Woman Down: A Novel.” Respectfully, when I read the book’s description, I laughed aloud.
“Her words used to set the page on fire. But a viral backlash over her latest film adaptation forced Petra Rose to take a hiatus, resulting in missed deadlines and an overdue mortgage,” Hoover said. “ … Detective Nathaniel Saint arrives with disturbing news, his presence igniting a creativity in her she thought long since burned out. Petra’s words return in a rush, and her fictional cop character begins to mirror the very real cop who’s becoming her muse.”
In case you missed it, this is blatantly a self-insert book, given the aforementioned drama with “It Ends with Us.” I can’t take it seriously.
I will not be supporting any of Hoover’s books or movies. There are a number of smaller authors I would rather support.
