Smoking policies, Plan 2008 headline roundtable

About 25 people attended the semester’s last Chancellor’s Roundtable Wednesday afternoon in Davies Center.

Snow removal was one of many items on the meeting’s agenda, and Chancellor Donald Mash elaborated on the subject. He said a plowing schedule is set in place for this winter.

Mash said Facilities Planning and Management’s first priority will be to clear parking lots on Lower Campus after snowfall. He added while residence halls generally take second priority, the university works as quickly as it can to accommodate all students.

Students also will be able to get out of snowy situations more easily with university-purchased shovels. The shovels will be available at the residence halls’ front desks this winter, Mash said.

Another issue discussed was Plan 2008, a UW Systemwide plan to increase diversity on campuses around the state.

Associate Vice Chancellor Kimberly Barrett said the program aims to ensure all students are taught equally.

Barrett said it will help all students in the system by encouraging diversity in learning situations.

“(It will) help round out a mix of students on campus,” she said.

Mash also brought the topic of smoking policies to the table and encouraged discussion on the issue.

Student Senate recently approved a resolution calling for a 25-foot smoking ban in front of all university entrances.

Enforcement of the ban was a concern among some students at the roundtable.

Chuck Major, director of housing and residence life, said he doesn’t believe there are many students smoking within 25 feet of the entrances.

He also said the amount of cigarette butts that are cleaned up around the grounds was down from last year.

There seems to be a respect for others, Major said.

But he added that RAs and hall directors are allowed to enforce the policies and, if needed for repeat offenders, to write a referral. The offender then is required to meet with the hall director to discuss further possible action.

Other suggestions were laid out on the smoking issue and will be announced to administration and faculty once further decisions have been made.

The final exam schedule for next year was also announced.

Administrative Officer Janice Morse said that next December’s final exam schedule lists Wednesday as the last day of classes, Thursday as a day off for students to study and Friday as the first day of finals

She added commencement will be Saturday and that finals will continue Monday.

The Chancellors Roundtable will begin again after winter break.
