Students who smoke may face more restrictions on campus if the resolution passed by Student Senate Monday night is approved by UW-Eau Claire Facilities Planning and Management.
The resolution, which received overwhelming support from the body, calls for the prohibition of smoking within a 25-foot radius of all university building entrances. It also supports the creation of a “sheltered smokers area” on Lower Campus.
A similar law already exists for the area in front of residence halls, after state legislators passed a ban last year.
Intergovernmental Affairs Commission Director Jeremy Ralston, an author of the resolution, said he feels smoking infringes on the rights of non-smokers.
Ralston pointed to the breezeway between Davies Center and Schofield Hall as being one of the smokiest areas on campus.
“I think (the ban) is legitimate, because (the smokers’) right to smoke infringes on my right to breathe clean air.” He added the presence of smokers on campus is unsightly for potential student visitors.
Organizations Commission Director Catherine Hanson was one of few voices against the resolution, which labeled secondhand smoke a carcinogen. She said in order to ban smoking near building entrances, students must have another place to smoke.
“Student health has to be one of our prime considerations; however, as we protect the health of students, we have to be sure there are viable options for (smokers),” Hanson said.
