International travel suggested during school

In the eight years Tom Grewe has taken classes at UW-Eau Claire, a highlight of his educational experience was traveling to East Europe with the History Department.

“Every student should have an international experience,” said 68-year-old Grewe, who is not working towards a degree, but takes classes for his own enjoyment.

Exploring museums, political institutions, concerts and operas throughout Europe was so enjoyable for Grewe, he took the trip twice.

Along with continuing Education, the History Department is offering an East Europe Travel Seminar Aug. 6-29 for students, faculty and community members.

Those participating will travel to Riga, Latvia, making stops at Auschwitz, Krakow, Szestachowa and Warsaw, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic; Vienna, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; Budapest, Hungary and Dresden, Germany.

Besides learning historical aspects of these areas, travelers can also take in the art, culture and politics, said history Professor Paulis Lazda, who is also the travel seminar director.

“After a trip like this, you’ll become addicted to travel,” Lazda said.

The travel group usually consists of about 15 people, he said.

The estimated cost for the trip is $1,921 which includes transportation, lodging, two meals a day and trip activities, but not airfare.

Financial aid is available to help with the cost of the trip for those who qualify, Lazda said.

He enjoys taking the trip with students because he can teach about history in the place where it happened.

“There’s nothing more exhilarating to tell students ‘this is where this happened,’ ” he said “To be practically touching history is exciting.”

Course credits are also available for participants of the trip at extra cost. Students can receive three undergraduate credits for enrolling in history 393, section 601 entitled “The History of East Europe.” The cost for course credit for the trip is about $425.

A non-refundable payment for the trip is due by May 10. The final payment is due July 1.
