The Polar Plunge is over, but UW-Eau Claire students are continuing to take part in events to raise money for charities.
The Eau Claire chapter of Phi Beta Lambda is sponsoring the third annual Special Olympics Mile of Quarters today through Thursday.
“I like doing stuff for charity,” said senior Robert Shaw, the treasurer of Phi Beta Lambda.
The organization will be collecting donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m in the East Lobby of Davies Center.
For each donation of $1 or more, the coed fraternity will write the donor’s name on a paper cut-out of a foot, which will be hung in the lobby to represent the Mile of Quarters.
The profits collected will be donated to the Indianhead Special Olympics.
In past years, the organization has raised $100 to $150, Shaw said.
Shaw said an actual mile of quarters is about $15,000, or 68,000 quarters, but the organization has more realistic goals of raising $150 to $200 this year.
The Mile of Quarters event helps Special Olympics reach its yearly goal of $120,000 for its budget, said Andrea Sullivan, development director and director of volunteers at Special Olympics.
Sullivan said the money raised for the organization helps it meet the goal of having a quality and respectable organization.
But more than the money matters to Sullivan.
Working with students is a lot of fun and gratifying for her, she said.
“I learn as much as they do.”
Sullivan said she works with many groups on campus and is always looking for more groups to work with.
Taking part in charity events like this one can be beneficial to students, Sullivan said.
“It certainly gives them a practical way to use the skills they’ve learned in the classroom.”
Phi Beta Lambda has also taken part in other activities in the past, such as March of Dimes.
