Football:
Football coach Todd Glaser announced 15 new recruits for the 2008 season. The recruits include three defensive linemen, two wide receivers and one cornerback. All of the recruits are from either Minnesota or Wisconsin.
Senior Marc Davis and alumnus Tony Hull have been named to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame’s 2008 NFF Hampshire Honor Society.
Players need to maintain at least a 3.2 GPA in order to be considered for membership. Davis and Hull are the only two representatives from the WIAC.
Hull, a wide receiver, was named the team’s offensive MVP. He had 40 catches for a total of 628 yards, which led the team. He is fifth on the all-time receiving list for the Blugolds with 2,066 yards.
Davis started 12 games this season as an offensive linemen. He was named to the WIAC’s all-Sportsmanship team.
Softball:
Freshman pitcher Jenny Ross received athlete of the week honors for the week of April 14. Ross started both games against UW-Stout on April 9 and picked up two wins. She struck out nine in the series and only gave up two runs, one of which was unearned. Ross also pitched a perfect game for the Blugolds on April 15, which has never happened in Blugold history.
NCAA Div. II:
The Blugolds rank 15 out of 420 NCAA Div. III programs in the Winter Directors’ Cup Standings. The Blugolds earned points in eight out of nine NCAA championships. Eau Claire has a total of 351 points, which is the sixth highest in the 13-year history of the all sports competition.
The women’s track team took home the most points with 66 at the Indoor National Championships. Women’s basketball earned 50 points and junior Josh Holforty got 41 points for his appearance in the wrestling championships.
Golf:
The Golf Coaches Association of America recently announced that senior Peter Wendt has been named to the watch list of 15 NCAA Div. III men’s golfer’s for the 2008 Jack Nicklaus Award.
The Nicklaus award is presented to a player in Div. I, II and III at the end of each respective championship. The honorees will be invited to Muirfield Village for the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
