Senior quarterback Jesse Krzyzanowski threw five touchdown passes in the first half of Saturday’s football game versus Illinois Wesleyan University (Ill.), tying the school game record in just one half.
Krzyzanowski broke the record in the third quarter, with six touchdown passes for the game. Jim Van Gorden set the original record in 1964.
The Blugolds got their first win of the season 46-0 over Illinois Wesleyan Saturday at Carson Park. The defense came through with the first shut out for the Blugolds since a 40-0 win against Bethel in 2002.
It was a day of broken records as senior tight end Garett Pankratz tied the school record with five touchdown receptions and matched his career total.
The Blugolds began strong with touchdowns on the first three possessions, two from Krzyzanowski to Pankratz and one to sophomore tight end Scotty Osborn.
“Every time I passed, I had time to pass, and the receivers were getting open,” Krzyzanowski said. “We wanted to show that our offense was capable of putting points on the board every time we touch the ball.”
On the first possession of the game, the ‘Golds’ offense took over right away with an 80-yard march down the field on nine plays.
A 45-yard punt return from sophomore wide receiver Tony Hull set up the ‘Golds’ second touchdown.
“We executed our plays much better today then verse St. John’s (Minn.),” Pankratz said.
The Blugolds lost last week’s home opener versus St. John’s, 35-28.
There were some new Blugold faces on the field Saturday. Freshman back-up quarterback Kyle Paulson made his first collegiate touchdown with a 16-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Chris Hull for the final score of the game.
There were about 24 players rotating on defense and 18 players on offense during Saturday’s 90-degree game.
The plan was to keep players fresh and avoid heat exhaustion, coach Todd Hoffner said.
The Blugold defense dominated, keeping Illinois Wesleyan to 111 total yards.
The defense also had three sacks, and linebacker junior Dan Rogney led the defense with six tackles.
“Defense shut them out, and the offense put up a lot of points,” Pankratz said. “You can’t ask for much more than that.”
Hoffner said he was very pleased with the way the Blugolds came into the game as well.
“I think our players’ attitudes and how they approached the game was tremendous,” he said.
Hoffner also said he was very proud of the throwing game, but disappointed in the running game.
“When it is tight, we are going to need to run the football,” he said.
The Blugolds have a bye next weekend, but continue their season Sept. 24 against the University of St. Francis (Ind.), who were last year’s National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national runner-up.
