Aside from the regular showings of campus films, this weekend will provide a different reason for the movie reels to spin.
The fourth annual S.T.I.F.F.E. event will show 12 to 15 films Sunday afternoon, said Zach Finch, aÿsenior political science legal studies major. He also is a member of University Activities Commission and an organizer of the event.

Despite its racy name, Finch said S.T.I.F.F.E. stands for Student Independent Film Festival.ÿ
This is the fourth event, even though it only is the third year of the festival, Finch said. The first year the film festival was held twice.ÿ
There will be one major change from the previous years, Finch said. There will be four awards this year instead of just one.ÿ
Along with the Best Film award, they will be adding Best Story, Best Use of the Visual Medium and an Audience award in which the audience will vote on their favorite.
By expanding the awards, it will be easier to pick winners, Finch said. Some films have different strengths than others, and some – while maybe not the best overall – utilize some aspects of filmmaking much better than others, he said.
Aside from the audience award, the winners are voted on by members of UAC, he said.ÿ
A good turnout is expected this year, said freshman Dave Bashaw, another UAC member who helped organize the event.
“There has been good turnouts from years past,” Bashaw said, “and hopefully that will be the case this year.”
UAC sponsors the event with funding from the student segregated fee budget, Finch said. Therefore, there is no cost for students who want to attend Sunday’s event. There also isn’t any registration fee for students who submit their films, he said.
The organization of the festival isn’t too difficult, Finch said, it’s really just a matter of “getting the ball rolling.”
“We follow pretty much the same outline as years past, so it’s not too difficult to get it going since it has already been established,” he said.
Finch has submitted films to S.T.I.F.F.E. in previous years.ÿ He said he is excited to see what the contestants come up with this year now that he is on the other end of the competition as one of the judges.
