The UW-Eau Claire women’s tennis team completed its season by claiming Eau Claire’s 10th consecutive conference title Sunday.
The Blugolds won four out of six singles flights at the WIAC conference championship at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
Senior Alison Hover beat the No. 1 single’s seed, UW-Oshkosh’s Debra Aschenbrenner, in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 to be the No. 1 singles player for the Blugolds.
“The seniors wanted to go out and get the best finish for their last conference tournament,” Hover said. “We wanted to play our best because we knew the conference title was in our reach if we stayed focus and on task.”
The No. 2 singles player for the Blugolds was freshman Laurie Alonso. She defeated UW-Oshkosh’s Mercedes Blanch 6-4, 7-5.
“There was good competition and some challenging teams but our team came in confident,” said Alonso, who was undefeated in conference play this season. “Overall, the team was mentally focused and motivated to continue the pattern.”
There were others who were undefeated within conference play, including junior Jenny Stafford and freshman Tara Anderson. Stafford defeated Louie Dubinski of La Crosse 6-0, 6-1 Saturday, while Anderson defeated Whitewater’s Maggie Seitz 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, the first-place championship went to the team of Hover and Alonso. They beat UW-Oshkosh’s undefeated team of Aschenbrenner and Blanch.
The second place doubles champions for the Blugolds was the team of Stafford and senior Megan Tauer.
“We were excited and looked forward to defending our title in this tournament,” Tauer said. “We were leading the conference and knew we were the better team so there was less pressure.”
Gillman said the team had a lot of No. 1 seeds and it had to keep its mind in a good set and remain loose.
“This was one of the best performing teams and even though it was a difficult flight they played at an ambitious level,” he said.
For upcoming seasons they can’t coach according to the streak but they will keep the bar high, Gillman said.
“The team has to stick together and fight through,” he said.
“With our 10th consecutive title, the team gave UWEC a reputation as a good school for women’s tennis,” Tauer said. “It’s not all about winning, but working hard as a team.”
She said she is proud of the team.
“The freshman came through well,” Tauer said. “Winning the conference title was the icing on the cake, especially for the seniors.”
