The Eau Claire volleyball team had its seven-match win streak snapped this past weekend as it fell to UW-Stout in the final of the Augsburg Invitational.
“Stout always plays some of their best matches against us,” coach Lisa Herb said.
Friday night in their first game of the tournament the ‘Golds beat St. Olaf (Minn.) 3-1.
The victory was the first for the Blugolds in five years against the Oles.
After defeating St. Olaf, the women swept St. Scholastica (Minn.) 3-0 in their second game of pool play.
The Blugolds reached the championship match by defeating Augsburg (Minn.) 3-0 Saturday morning.
Junior Brooke Wozniak led the way offensively for the ‘Golds against the Auggies. Wozniak racked up 20 kills with a .769 hitting percentage
The final saw the women win the first game 30-23 but lose the next three, 30-26, 30-27 and 30-28. Stout and Whitewater are now the only teams in the conference without a loss this season.
“We played extremely well on Friday,” Herb said. “We didn’t play quite as consistent on Saturday.”
In the final, Wozniak again led the team offensively with help from junior Annie Kabat.
Wozniak tallied 16 kills and Kabat pitched in with 14.
“Brooke really had an exceptional weekend,” Herb said. “She brought her game to a new level.”
The Blugolds played the final without starting middle blocker sophomore Becca Carstensen.
Sophomore Lindsay Pederson stepped in for the injured Carstensen.
Carstensen sprained an ankle early in the Augsburg match and was forced to watch the final from the bench.
“We still had a chance to win,” Herb said. “We just made more mistakes than they did.”
Those mistakes came in the form of unforced errors, Herb said.
“We missed 16 serves,” she said. “That was a big factor in the loss.”
Wozniak and senior setter Andrea Hemple were named to the 12-player All-Tournament team. Hemple compiled 55 assists against Stout and 41 in the Augsburg match.
Next weekend the women travel to Illinois for the Elmhurst Tournament.
