The men’s and women’s swimming teams are happy with where they are at this point in the season as they prepare for a meet Friday at UW-Stevens Point.
“We’re doing really good,” senior Kaici Burk said of the women’s team. “We’re doing better than expected.”
The men’s team also is happy with its progress.
“We’re starting to come together,” senior Chris Smith said.
The coach is happy with the progress of both teams.
“We’re doing well,” Rob Welcher said. “We’re showing promise.”
“We’re ahead of schedule,” Smith said of the men’s team. “We’re working on endurance earlier than last year.”
The men’s team also is focusing on technique. at this point in the season.
“It’s coming along really well,” sophomore Nick Robertson said.
The women’s team also is happy with its progress.
“We feel good about practice,” Burk said. “We’re showing a lot of progress. We’re at where we want to be.”
The teams are working on their conditioning.
“We’re working on the basic level of being in shape,” Welcher said. “Technique is in mind but it’s not the focus.”
The teams brought their emphasis in technique and conditioning into the Midwest Coed Relays, which was held on Oct. 20.
They finished second in four different events. That was good for a tie for third place.
“We did rather well,” Robertson said.
Many of the swimmers were not there.
“The seniors were given the option to take the meet off,” Welcher said. “All but one did. We did really good considering we were missing 10 swimmers.”
The teams hope to do just as well at Stevens Point, which is one of the strongest teams in the conference.
“Point is big, tough, talented,” Smith said. “There will be some great races, and some great times.”
