The UW-Eau Claire men’s track and field team dominated Friday night at the Blugold Invitational, capturing their second victory of the season.

The Blugolds took first place in all but three of 16 events, winning with a total of 262 points. Their closest competitor only came within 163 points of the Blugolds.

Freshman Sean Gavigan’s time of one minute and 54.89 seconds in the 800-meter run set a school record. He beat the 20-year-old mark of 1:55.00.

“We really mopped up everybody last night,” junior James Larson said. “Team-wise we’re doing really well.”

Larson took first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:46.68. He said he is looking forward to running the 5 kilometer next week at Oshkosh. Larson hopes to hit the provisional national qualifying time.

Kyran Hamill won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:29.90. He beat the second-place finisher by more than 25 seconds.

The team won every jumping event with freshman Nick Dudycha, sophomore Kou Thao and sophomore Jeff Bergstrom each taking first place in their respective events.

Sophomore David Hanson, sophomore Chad Crutchley, freshman Ben Bilke and sophomore Chris Crutchley finished in that order to take the first four spots in the 200-meter dash.

Junior John Brumund-Smith won the 400 with a time of 51.87. Jeff Burkhart won the 1,500-meter run with a time of four minutes and 6.58 seconds. Larson ran a 8:46.68 to take first in the 3,000-meter run.

“It was a good meet with a competitive atmosphere,” coach Scott Steuernagel said. “Our first true test will be this weekend.”

After the Eastbay Heptathlon on Friday, The ‘Golds head to Oshkosh Saturday where they will meet two stellar teams UW-Oshkosh and North Central College out of Naperville, Ill.

Two years ago, Oshkosh was ranked No. 2 in the country indoors. North Central were the outdoor national champions last year.

“We’re going to give it our best shot this weekend,” Steuernagel said. “This meet will give us a chance to see how we stack up against the better teams this early in the season. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”
