Both candidates for student body president possess some attributes beneficial to the position: however, neither ticket encompasses all qualities necessary to be a successful leader of Student Senate.
The Spectator editorial board, after hearing presentations from both tickets and debating for more than two hours, has come to the conclusion that to endorse either contender would compromise the integrity of the endorsement itself.
The Spectator feels the student body is being short-changed in this week’s election, as the presidential tickets leave too much to be desired in terms of both of their abilities and platforms.
The Issue Student Senate presidential candidates spoke with The Spectator about their platforms. |
A clear line has been drawn between the “insider” and “outsider” Student Senate tickets and there is something to be said for each. In order to be a successful president, one has to have ample knowledge of the inner workings of Senate. However, it also is essential the body’s leader not be too far removed from the rest of the student population.
In the eyes of The Spectator, neither candidate fulfills these requirements.
Furthermore, the platforms of both tickets focus on reforms that would affect small fragments of UW-Eau Claire’s population, on one hand Greek organizations and on the other Freshman Year Experience participants, but would do little to ignite positive change for the whole student body.
By not endorsing either ticket in this year’s election, The Spectator can only hope that next year more qualified individuals will seek the office of Senate president, and revitalize a student body that has become disinterested in student government.
