Since I began writing a semi-regular column for The Spectator, I have received both positive and negative feedback. I’ve had a City Council member tell me to “go f— myself,” a rare rebuttal editorial written by a former member of The Spectator and two e-mails saying “great editorial, Matt.” Life has a funny way of balancing things out, doesn’t it?
So with president Harry Truman’s words “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen” firmly in my mind, I looked for an editorial topic that wouldn’t irritate anyone.
Often during elections we get to know candidates by their stances on the issues and not on a personal level. To change that, I sent a letter to the nine remaining City Council candidates asking them to fill out a questionnaire inquiring about their favorite movie, newspaper and magazine.
To me, the most interesting question asked was to name their favorite politician. This question could point to what kind political philosophy the candidates have.
Before I show you the results, let me add that simply because a candidate has similar tastes in magazines or restaurants or favorite politicians, he or she may not hold any of the same viewpoints on issues important to you, such as student, faculty and visitor access to parking on streets in the Third Ward. That duty I will leave to you.
Enjoy and be sure to vote tomorrow.
