Hello, beloved Spectator readers. I am happy to share my new column, “Popette,” where I talk about anything and everything related to pop culture.
When thinking about what to title this new column, I knew I wanted something that related to pop culture in the name, and I found the cute word “popette,” which is defined as “a young female fan or performer of pop music.”
I knew this title was perfect because most of the topics or people I will be talking about, I am often a fan of.
The goal of this column is to create a place for myself, or other writers if they feel inspired, to talk about anything and everything pop culture.
But, like any other introduction for something new, I must introduce myself, a.k.a., the writer and creator of this column.
My name is Taylor, and I am a second-year creative writing student with a certificate in rhetorics of sciences, technology and culture. However, like many people, my major does not define me, and I have a wide range of interests that extend beyond reading and writing.
I am a person with many hyperfixations, and at the moment, I have a number of them: “House of the Dragon” (2022), mostly Rhaenyra and her children, “9-1-1” (2018), Pedro Pascal and “The Basement Yard” podcast.
Television-wise, I do not have much I can say about “House of the Dragon,” despite the emotional turmoil it causes me. I love Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy so much that I can’t look away.
With “9-1-1,” I love the characters Evan “Buck” Buckely and Eddie Diaz. And, yes, for those who have seen the show, I am rooting for them to get together, but I am also still in denial of the recent death. Please don’t talk to me about it. It did not happen.
But, with the recent teaser trailer being dropped, I imagine “The Summer I Turned Pretty” (2022) will be joining that list, because I love the show and the books by Jenny Han. Before anyone asks, I am Team Conrad and cannot wait for the downfall of Jeremiah Fisher in season three.
I also have three musicians that I cannot stop listening to: Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Sombr.
In fact, I just bought tickets to see Sombr in September this year, and I cannot be more excited. I have his two songs, “back to friends” and “undressed,” stuck on repeat. They are so good.
As for Swift, I am currently on a hunt for more of her vinyls, with only having “folklore” (2020) at the moment, but I desperately want my other two favorite albums as well. Those being “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT” (2024), but I especially want the Anthology version of that album.
I also want “reputation” (2017), but I am waiting until she releases Taylor’s Version, because I cannot wait for the vault tracks on it. Go ahead, Swift, take your time, I am sure the tracks are straight fire — not that you need my permission or anything.
I also love listening to “The Basement Yard,” but I have already written an article expressing my love for that.
Food-wise, I also have a few things that I cannot live without, which are Dr. Pepper and Raising Cane’s. About the latter, I do understand why people think it’s “mid,” but I love the combo of the sauce and toast, as well as a cup of that lemonade, which is strained to remove the pulp, unlike Chick-fil-A.
Anyway, this article is just meant to be a brief introduction of the column, who I am and what I am obsessed with at the moment. I cannot wait to start this journey with you, and I hope you enjoy my unnecessary opinion.
