Sasser worm eats campus computers

An Internet worm known as the Sasser worm, which exploits vulnerability in both Windows 2000 and XP, affected the university network Monday.

According to an e-mail sent to students by Computing and Networking Services:

The affected computers could not be repaired via remote access, but only through manual repairs. CNS repaired the computers by priority, fixing classrooms and teaching stations first, the general access labs second and then remaining stations.

The worm has been removed from all university computers, and updates were installed to prevent future Sasser worm threats.

Defense against the worm for home computers is available through CNS and the Microsoft Web site.

If anyone has any questions or concerns regarding the issue or has infected home computers, contact CNS through its help desk at 836-5711 or at [email protected].
