On Saturday, the Eau Claire Rod and Gun club will be hosting a UW System-wide archery competition; the first event of its kind. The competition is not limited to members of the club, and anyone may participate; however, along with a $20 entry fee, there is a 60 shooter limit, so spots will be limited. Spots will be given out on a first come first serve basis.
The tournament will be held in the indoor archery range in the Environmental Adventures Center, located in the basement of Hilltop.
Rod and Gun club President, Daniel Platta said the organization hopes to have competitions every spring in the future in addition to the archery leagues they run every semester.
In addition to offering a competition in which to display your archery abilities, the Rod and Gun club is also having a raffle. Participants are entered into the raffle as part of the entry fee and have a chance to win either a Mathews Drenalin or Hoyt Katera bow. The top finishers in the competition will also receive archery equipment as their award.
Kyle DeVillers, a member of the Rod and Gun club, said that it would be a “five spot tournament” and that they are pretty standard. Targets are round with five color coded rings. The closer to the center a shot is, the more points it is worth. The shooter with the most points at the end of the competition is the winner.
Platta expects at least 50 participants to sign up, but says that if the group fails to reach 40 signups by today, they will call off the event.
Aside from archery, the Rod and Gun club also participates in fishing competitions and tree planting events. The group currently has approximately 20 members, but is open to everyone who is interested in joining. Anyone interested in joining the Rod and Gun club may email President Daniel Platta at [email protected] or attend one of their monthly meetings.
