Women’s indoor track and field
The Blugolds took third in the WIAC Indoor Championships at UW-Whitewater with 123 points.
The two-day event ended Saturday with UW-La Crosse winning the event for the seventh time in eight years. La Crosse had 205 points.
The Blugolds had four automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The 4×400-meter relay team broke a school and meet record with a time of 3:55.28, an automatic qualifier.
Seniors Chelsea Becker and Steph Barnes finished first and second in the pole vault, clearing heights of 12-3 1/2, good for automatic qualifiers.
Sophomore Liz Kooistra finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.65, breaking a school record and automatically qualifying her for the NCAA championships.
Kooistra was also one of many Blugolds to earn provisional qualifiers.
Men’s indoor track and field
UW-Eau Claire finished fifth in the WIAC Indoor Championships with 83 points. The men also competed at Whitewater on Friday and Saturday.
Like in the women’s meet, La Crosse took first, its sixth straight time winning the event. La Crosse finished with 171 points.
The men didn’t have any automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championships, but did have three provisional qualifiers.
Sophomore Wes Fischer won the 800-meter run with a 1:54.28 mark; senior Ryan Brohmer finished fifth in the 35-pound weight throw and the 4×400 team took fourth with a time of 3:20.96, all provisional qualifiers.
Blugold athletes have one more chance to qualify for the NCAA meet at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 9 and 10 in Terre Haute, Ind.
