Some band breakups are bitter and create wounds that cannot be healed, but Matt Sharp said his nearly six-year hiatus from his band, The Rentals, was just to figure out what he wanted to do and find voice as a writer.
Sharp, formerly of Weezer and frontman of the recently reunited The Rentals, will perform a solo show at 8 p.m. Friday in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center as part of a collaborative effort among Student Radio Initiative, University Activities Commission and Volume One.
The opening act will be local band The Daredevil Christopher Wright.
It is an all-ages show, and alcohol purchases will be available for those of age.
Sharp mostly will draw on The Rentals’ songs and a few of his solo works, with the possibility of a Weezer song or two.
This show will be unique, Sharp said.
“This show is interesting and terrifying . (because I haven’t) played a solo show in general where it’s just me, a guitar and the audience. I haven’t done that in, I think, well over a year now, and usually when I’ve toured like this, I play several consecutive shows. What’s challenging about this particular show is just coming into it cold. It definitely puts the fear of God in you,” Sharp said.
Sharp also said it probably will be his last solo show, because he is enjoying performing with others.
“I really enjoy the collaborative moments I’m having now,” he said, “and so it’s kind of one last hurrah in the solo thing.”
Drawing on songs by The Rentals will be different than other solo shows he’s done, Sharp said. Overall, he said he enjoys the tradeoff and interaction of the keyboards, strings and backup vocals in Rentals’ songs.
He said because of this, some are tricky to play just on a guitar.
Senior Marty Brueggemann, a fan of Sharp and The Rentals, said he thinks the songs will transfer well.
“I think it’s going to be a pretty fluid process,” he said, “where a lot of his songs have an earnest simplicity to them . I think we’re still going to hear solid, full-sounding songs.”
Sharp said he will rely on a lot of audience participation to help fill out the songs.
The stage will have a more intimate feel, as only Christmas lights will light the stage. There will be three slide projectors running, and the back of the stage will be a large screen, said senior Patrick Boland, concert director of SRI, UW-Eau Claire’s Internet broadcast student radio station.
He also said he heard Sharp often invites fans to sit on stage with him.
“It will almost be like a storyteller-like thing where he is interacting with the audience and telling stories,” Boland said.
Along with audience participation during the show, fans can have a say in the show by filling out a poll at www.therentals.com/return/.
Sharp said he would take some into consideration.
He is most famous for being a founder member of Weezer and recording on both The Blue Album and Pinkerton. His band, The Rentals, formed in 1994 and released two albums before disbanding in 1999.
Sharp released a solo album in 2004, and The Rentals reunited last October. Sharp said they hope to have an album out in 2006.
