With the Conference meet coming up on Friday in Oshkosh, the UW-Eau Claire gymnasts hope to be at their peak against the two conference teams, La Crosse and Oshkosh, they lost to this season.
Currently, they are at a WIAC record of 5-2. Coach Lisa McIntyre said she has made the practices a little harder to help prepare for the meet.
“I think putting more pressure on them will make them more confident at the meet,” McIntyre said. “We definitely have the talent.”
The team has to be very aggressive to be the conference champions.
“Last week, we went three-for-four in our events, and the week before we went two-for-four,” McIntyre said. “This week we want to go four-for-four.”
Senior Jessica Pink said she believes Eau Claire can win the meet.
“La Crosse and Oshkosh are very consistent and on the same level as us,” Pink said. “We want to be the conference champs.”
Not only will the Blugolds have to compete against Oshkosh, but the meet is in Oshkosh, as well.
“We have to be there as a team,” Pink said. “I think the biggest thing is getting everyone focused to put together a full meet.”
Junior co-captain Kristina Reitzel said this is the meet that the team shows they can go four for four.
“We need to really stick all events,” Reitzel said. “This is kind of our first step in proving ourselves.”
The team has been working on their consistency in practice, said Reitzel.
The Blugolds have beaten La Crosse in the past, and freshman Lindsey Raymond said they can do it again.
Raymond earned a score of 8.925 on the floor routine last week and will compete again this week.
“The coaches have been upping our workouts and practices to prepare us,” Raymond said. “I feel we have been doing good, but we can always get better.”
Sophomore Alison Eagles still will compete this week, despite the knee injury she suffered last week.
“I think they have a slight advantage at home,” Eagles said. “If we stay on track, we can beat them.”
Eagles also said she feels the team definitely can do their best this meet.
