The women’s golf team finished in sixth place out of 20 teams in the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Golf Classic over the weekend.
“The tournament went pretty well for us,” freshman Susan Karlman said. “There were some Div. II teams there and the competition was strong.”
The women went into the final round Sunday 13 shots behind the leader, De Pauw University (Ind.). De Pauw won the tournament with a two-day total of 628. Eau Claire finished play with a two-day total of 651. St Ambrose (Iowa) came in second with a score of 631. Quincy University (Ill.) finished third with a final score of 634. UW-Oshkosh finished fourth with a score of 647. Truman State (Mo.) finished one stroke ahead of the Blugolds with a 650.
Most of the teams played well on the course layout at Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Normal, Ill, Karlman said.
“Lots of teams took advantage of the course layout,” Karlman said. “There was a little sand and water and for the players who were not long-ball players, it played well.”
Junior Jen Prock led the ‘Golds with an overall finish of 14th place. The two-time Blugold letter winner shot an 83 Saturday and a 76 Sunday for a total of 159 for the weekend.
“Jen’s playing well lately,” head coach John Rawdon said.
Continuing her impressive rookie season, freshman Maggie Loney ended the tournament with a score of 163 and a 25th placing.
Loney has finished in the top three for the Blugolds in three of the four tournaments this season. Senior captain Karen Law finished with a total of 165. Freshman Kristen Muranyi finished the tournament with a 168.
Karlman rounded out the Blugold’s scores with a total of 174. Karlman improved on her 91 from Saturday by eight shots on Sunday for a score of 83.
“The short game is what’s holding the Blugolds back right now,” Karlman said. “We have to make sure that there are no three-putts and double bogeys.”
On Friday the Blugolds will compete in the Carthage College Invitational in Kenosha. The tournament is only 18 holes, compared to the normal 36
After the Carthage tournament it will be off to UW-Oshkosh for a tournament Saturday and Sunday.
“This is a pivotal point in the season,” Rawdon said. “We need to go down there and win both events.”
The Blugolds are practicing for both events but see the Oshkosh tournament as more of a battle.
“Oshkosh is the team we are focused on,” Karlman said. “This is their home course and they know it very well. We are ready though.”
