After an initial postponement, the WIAC Softball Cluster Tournament was completely canceled this weekend, meaning the softball team had 16 games postponed or canceled due to inclement weather this season.

Saturday night’s heavy, wet snow left Wakanda Park in Menomonie covered in two to three inches of snow on Sunday afternoon, forcing the tournament’s cancellation.

UW-Stout head coach Chris Stainer and a member of the UW-Stout grounds department surveyed the fields at 6:30 a.m. Sunday and described them as “soup holes” with water standing under the snow cover, according to a press release from the Blue Devils’ athletic department.

The games from the tournament will not be rescheduled.

UW-La Crosse, which was scheduled to play Eau Claire on Sunday, was just a few games behind the Blugolds going into this weekend’s game. The Eagles will have to wait until May 3 for the WIAC tournament to get a piece of the Blugolds, who only have one conference defeat to La Crosse’s three this season.

The Eagles are hosting the WIAC Tournament this season. The winner of that tournament gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The winner of the regional competition gets a bid to the Div. III Championships being held at Carson Park May 16-20.

The Blugolds will play at UW-Superior today in make-up games from last week and close the regular season against Concordia St. Paul, Minn. on Tuesday.
