The women’s tennis team had their match last weekend postponed when UW-Stout decided to cancel all their athletic events for the weekend. All the cancellation did was delay the inevitable, as the Blugolds swept the Blue Devils 9-0.
The win over Stout, coupled with a 6-3 win over Luther College (Iowa), made the past weekend a very successful one for the Blugolds.
On Friday, the Blugolds hosted Stout in the make-up match from the previous week. Eau Claire won every singles and doubles match, many of them in convincing fashion.
Sophomore Jenny Stafford and junior Megan Tauer each won their singles matches without losing a game, and junior Allison Hover won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
“Stout is usually one of the weaker teams we play,” Hover said. “I think the older players expected to win the match, but nobody expected to win by that much.”
Hover and Stafford teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Molly Cadwell and junior Melissa Huppert also swept with an 8-0 win.
“It was exciting to get our first conference win,” Hover said. “We have improved a lot from our first match of the year against Wheaton.”
After taking care of Stout, the Blugolds traveled to Decorah, Iowa to play Luther College, and again came out on top, this time by a score of 6-3.
“I was a little nervous going into that match, because Luther is a tougher team,” Stafford said. “I was really happy about the way we played.”
Hover and Stafford each won again in singles play, and they teamed up to win in doubles as well. The Blugolds also got wins from the doubles team of Cadwell and Huppert, and from freshmen Tara Anderson and Lindsay Lee in singles.
This weekend, the Blugolds will return to Decorah to take part in the ITA Rolex Regional tournament. This tournament brings in the top individuals from around the midwest. The individuals that win receive All-American honors.
