In her freshman year, Meghan Konet joined intramural sports as a way to get to know more people.

“I had always played sports,” she said. “I wanted to get to know my friends a little better.”

This fall, Konet, a senior, will once again be a part of intramural sports, marking five years of participation.

Konet is just one of the hundreds of UW-Eau Claire students who sign up for intramural sports every year. Jon Bollinger, program manager for intramural sports, said there will be about 225 intramural teams this semester.

With nine sports available in the fall, there are plenty of options for people who want to get involved in intramurals.

“I’ve enjoyed the whole experience of intramurals,” Konet said. “I get to be outside, doing something I really enjoy.”

Konet recommended that students sign up for intramurals no matter what their ability level. There are plenty of sports available with various levels of competition.

Bollinger said the programs available this fall are flag football, softball, sand volleyball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, roller hockey, three-on-three basketball, tennis, and the newest edition, kickball.

Konet, who has played volleyball, softball and kickball during her college years, said flag football is the most popular of the fall sports, with the teams usually filling up on the first day of sign-up.

Sign-up for fall intramural sports begins today and runs through Friday, Bollinger said. Team sports cost $20 per team, and individual sports have a fee of $1.00 per student.

Even though she will be graduating in December, Konet hopes to still be involved with intramural sports next semester. She is currently a supervisor in the intramural program, and is considering working there in the spring, as well.

“I love it,” she said. “It’s a place to go when you want to have fun.”
