Last Friday and Saturday the women’s hockey team beat UW-Stevens Point twice to continue the streak starting the previous weekend.

Women’s hockey took down UW-Stevens Point twice this weekend winning both games 2-1 and pushing their win streak to three games.

On Friday, the Blugolds started slow, not scoring in the first two periods. Eau Claire scored in the third period before scoring and winning in overtime.

The second game of the weekend saw the Blugolds start the game strong with Mariah Czech, a senior, scoring in the first period and then ultimately winning the game with another in the third period, also scored by Czech and assisted by first-year defensemen Morgan Zirbel and junior Kelly Knetter.

Head coach Erik Strand said the team prepares for every week the same way.

“We didn’t do anything different because it was Stevens Point, it’s just continuing to improve as a team,” Strand said.

The Blugolds outshot Stevens Point 44-18 in the first game and continued that momentum into Saturday, 30-20.

Sami Meister, a second-year defenseman, scored the first goal on Friday in the third period at 18:02 which was assisted by Elizabeth Bauer, a second-year forward, and Courtney Wittig, a junior. The second and final goal of the game was scored by Jaedyn Walz, a senior, in over-time at 1:58.

Walz said the team’s main focus is confidence and focusing on the game they are playing.

“I think our key to success coming into these games is not really focusing on their game but focusing on our game,” Walz said. “We know that if we come out and play with our talent and our systems that we’re confident in what we can do.”

On Friday, the Blugolds beat the Pointers 57-36 in face-offs but came up short on Saturday, winning 26 to Stevens Point’s 54.

Both Eau Claire and Stevens Point held strong defense the whole game, but Eau Claire came out on top being able to score in over time.

After making the conference tournament last year and losing out after a tough loss to UW-River Falls, Meister said it gives them motivation to push harder this season to get to that spot again.

Strand said the team gained confidence over the season, especially beating out Adrian College in the beginning of the season. That win played a role in beating Stevens Point three games in a row.

“That game, I think, just confirmed what this group feels about it self that they can skate with any team any night. So if anything it gave them more confidence,” Strand said.

Heading into the final games of the season, Strand said they play one day at a time and focus on making each game better than the last.

“We need to worry about playing everyday. You have to take each day and just win that day,” Strand said. “If you do take care of those situations the rest of it’s going to come together.”

Eau Claire takes on River Falls at 2 p.m. this Saturday on the road and again at 2 p.m. next Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena.
