Despite battling poor weather conditions, the UW-Eau Claire women’s tennis team let UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh blow away with the wind last weekend.

Head coach Tom Gillman said he was pleased with his team’s performance, especially with the weather conditions.

“We were willing to adjust in the wind and cold weather,” Gillman said. “Some teams would collapse mentally in the weather, but we didn’t get lazy mentally.”

The Blugolds defeated the Pointers 9-0 in the first road match Friday afternoon.

At No. 1 singles Sarah Henderson defeated Stevens Point’s Katelyn Asfeld 6-1, 7-5. In addition, No. 2 singles Colleen McCullough defeated Emily Kleist 6-3, 6-2.

Coach Gillman said he is impressed with junior Olivia Gallagher this season.

“She has made big leaps in the lineup this year and has learned how to be consistent,” Gillman said.

Gallagher defeated Nicole Thorson 6-1, 6-3.

Against UW-Oshkosh, the Blugolds continued their strong play and defeating the Titans 9-0.

Once again, at No. 1 singles, Henderson defeated Bailey Sagen 6-3, 6-2. No. 6 singles Kendra Berry swept Hannah Nauth 6-0, 6-0.

The Blugolds moved to 8-2 on the season with the wins, with their only losses on the season to UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse.

Heading into the WIAC Championship, Coach Gillman said they need to continue to have good practices and keep a focused mindset to be successful in the tournament.

Another individual who has been impressive for the Blugolds, Gillman said, is the No. 1 singles player Henderson.

Henderson, a sophomore, played No. 4 singles last year. She said she had fun this year competing at a higher level of completion.

“We stepped up this weekend. We bounced back and put our loss against La Crosse behind us,” Henderson said.

Going into the playoffs, the Blugolds look to keep their positive mindset present, Henderson said.

The next competition for the Blugolds is at 12:40 p.m. next Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
