With two meets left in the indoor track season, the Blugolds men’s and women’s track and field teams placed second and third in their conferences this past weekend at UW-Platteville.

Four men claimed the top spot in their events during the two-day meet. Senior Cody Prince won and set a new record in the triple jump, senior Roger Steen won shot put, senior Brandon Zarnoth won the heptathlon and freshman Josh Thorson won the 3000-meter run.

Assistant coach Dan Schwamberger said everyone seemed to come together this past weekend.

“There’s a lot of people we could talk about, but really, everyone did really well,” he said.

The women’s team finished sixth last year, and senior Lucy Ramquist said she and her teammates set a goal in the beginning of the season to place in the top three in conference.

“We were pretty happy with it,” Ramquist said. “Last year we got sixth place overall, so it was a really big improvement from last year.”

Ramquist garnered first place finishes in both the 3000-meter run and one mile event. Her teammate, senior Carly Fehler, also captured first place finishes in both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash.

Both teams will travel to UW-Stevens Point to compete in the Last Chance Meet. Schwamberger said this meet is exactly what it sounds like: it’s the last chance athletes get to qualify for nationals the following weekend.

At the national meet, Schwamberger said the top 17 women and top 15 men in the nation compete in their respective event. The assistant coach also said it’s typical for many Blugolds to compete the last weekend of the indoor track season.

“Last year, our men’s team was second in the nation,” Schwamberger said. “The women placed thirteenth, and they’re better this year than last. Both teams should be able to do very well at nationals.”

Even with the end of the indoor season looming, Schwamberger said everyone is already looking ahead to the upcoming outdoor season. Ramquist said the season starts soon after spring break, which is the main focus for track and field athletes.

For now, the senior said she’s focusing on resting this weekend before the national meet in North Carolina March 13 and 14.
