Warhawks handle Blugolds

The UW-Whitewater Warhawks have won three national titles in the last seven years, and they flexed their national powerhouse muscles early and often against the UW-Eau Claire football team, beating the Blugolds 42-0 Friday night at Perkins Stadium in Whitewater.

Whitewater scored 14 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second to take a commanding 28-0 lead headed into halftime. The Warhawks tacked on 14 more points in the second half.

Eau Claire was only able to muster up 136 yards of total offense in the game. All-American running back Joel Sweeney was held to 19 yards on 12 carries.

Sophomore Joel Newman replaced regular starter Mark Munger at quarterback in the game and wound up completing four of eight passes for 33 yards.

Senior Scott Burzynski led the defense with 12 tackles, 10 of them being solo.

The Blugolds fell to 0-6 with the loss, but they have an opportunity to win their first game of the season at home Saturday against UW-River Falls. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Carson Park.
