    `Golds tower over Stevens Point

    The Blugolds vs. Pointers game proved to be a tough one Wednesday night in Stevens Point. The women came back from a two-point deficit at halftime to win by 19 points.

    The Blugolds controlled the game for the beginning of the first half, but the Pointers took control with seven minutes remaining.

    In the first half, the Pointers’ lead never exceeded six points.

    The Pointers controlled the rest of the half, ending with a 27-25 lead at the break.

    Senior Megan Murphy tied the game at 27 with a jumper to open scoring for the second half

    The Blugolds worked to steadily increased their lead over the Pointers. They remained in control of the court for the last 12 minutes of the contest.

    In the second half, the Pointers never held the lead by more than four points.

    Senior Vanessa Schley led the Blugolds in scoring with 16 points, 11 of which were scored in the first half. Schley is the lead scorer for the Blugolds.

    Sophomore Janel Soppeland and senior Jessie Brantner each scored 13 points for the Blugolds.

    The Pointer’s highest scorer contributed 12 points. Only one other person scored in the double digits for the Pointers.

    The Blugolds shot 43.6 percent from the field on the game, making just one of their 11 three-point field goal attempts and hitting 62.1 percent of their free throws.

    Stevens Point’s shooting percentages were significantly lower than Eau Claire’s, with Point only completing 27.3 percent of its total field goal attempts.

    With this loss Stevens Point falls out of a WIAC tie for third place into fifth place standing behind UW-Stout, which holds a 9-5 conference record and Eau Claire at 9-4.

    The Blugold victory sets up a showdown for second place in the WIAC race with UW-River Falls (10-3 in WIAC play).

    Tip-off is at 7 p.m. in River Falls.
