Women’s hockey drop series to River Falls

Women’s hockey couldn’t win on the road this weekend against UW-River Falls.

On Friday the Blugolds managed to score two goals, but couldn’t answer any of the Falcons’ goals Saturday.

“We went out there knowing that we had to win one game to be in the playoffs,” freshman Kaiti O’Connell said. “We were confident; we thought that we could beat them.”

River Falls struck early Friday, scoring two unanswered goals in the first period. The Blugolds were not allowed a shot the entire first period.

“We knew they were tough,” O’Connell said. “I don’t think we worked as hard as we usually do.”

After River Falls built a 4-0 advantage at the 5:54 mark of the second period, the Blugolds got on the board when senior Bree Schacht scored a power-play goal.

River Falls then went on to score another four goals until junior Michelle Coughlin scored from an assist from O’Connell at the 15:35 mark of the second period.

The Falcons led going into the second intermission, 8-2.

River Falls scored the lone goal late in the third period to end the game with the Blugolds trailing 9-2.

“They have a real solid team,” sophomore Connie Cameron said. “Their play is strong; I guess we just couldn’t get through them.”

River Falls shut out the Blugolds 9-0 the next day.

River Falls scored three goals in the first period, four in the second and two in the third.

The Blugolds were unable to capitalize on any of their three power plays.

Junior goalie Carol Bochanyin made 35 saves in the game.

Eau Claire attempted 13 shots, while River Falls attempted 44.

Eau Claire will play a series at home Friday and Saturday against Lake Forest College (Minn.).
