Gymnasts to take on Texas schools

Although the Blugolds posted their highest team score so far this season, they were unable to win over the competition.

The women’s gymnastics team faced Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at McPhee Tuesday.

The Blugolds scored 165.375 points to the Golden Gusties’ 168.675 points.

“Overall, I think everyone did really well,” said sophomore Lara Harris. “I don’t think anyone felt bad about the loss because we improved our team score so much.”

“We improved our team score by five points,” junior Sarah Aldridge said. “I think everyone improved individually, which really helped out the team.”

In the all-around competition, Harris scored 33.80, which was good enough to take second place.

“Lara Harris had a really awesome meet,” Aldridge said. “I think she had the best meet of her college career. She hit all of her events.”

Freshman Kristina Reitzel and junior Jessica Pink took third and fourth places in the all-around competition for the Blugolds.

“Kristina Reitzel had a great vault,” Harris said. “She hasn’t competed in two years, so she’s been doing great.”

Harris said Pink also did well on the floor. “She had a great routine,” Harris said.

Sophomore Erin Henrich took the highest individual finish for the Blugolds with a second place finish on the balance beam.

She posted a score of 8.45. Henrich also took eighth place on the vault, and she finished seventh on the floor.

Other top 10 finishes were posted by freshman Micaela Statz, placing seventh on the vault, ninth on the uneven parallel bars and fifth on the floor.

Aldridge took seventh on the bars with a score of 7.65, while sophomore Alicia Geving took 10th place with a score of 7.10.

On Jan. 27, the gymnasts will travel to Denton, Texas to face Texas Woman’s University in a triangular meet.

“Texas Women’s College is a Division II school, so we aren’t really expecting to win,” Aldridge said. “We’re hoping to get a team score of 170, which would be a great improvement for us.”

“We’re really looking forward to the meet,” Harris said. “We’ve heard that they’re a really good team, we’re going to try our best, and have fun.”
