    Women top Superior in conference matchup

    The Blugold women’s basketball team got off to a slow start Wednesday night against UW-Superior but came back in a big way.

    Led by senior forward Vanessa Schley’s 17 points, Eau Claire went on to beat the Yellowjackets 85-37 on the road.

    Superior jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before senior Megan Murphy put the first Blugold points on the board more than two minutes into the game.

    The Yellowjackets held a 10-9 lead more than five minutes into the first half before Murphy scored on a jumper that started a scoring drive.

    Their scoring streak lasted until the game ended in Eau Claire’s favor.

    Eau Claire held a commanding 45-17 lead after at the close of the first half.

    Including Schley, three Blugolds scored in the double figures. Senior guard Meagan Whatley scored 11 points and Murphy chipped in 10 points to lead the Blugolds to their 48 point victory.

    In all, 15 women put points on the scoreboard for the Blugolds

    Schley also led the team with eight rebounds and made all seven of her attempts from the charity stripe.

    Senior forward Sheri Domitrovich led the way for the Yellowjackets, scoring 14 points and pulling down 9 rebounds.

    The win improved the ‘Golds’ record to 14-4 overall and 7-3 in WIAC action.

    The Blugolds won three consecutive games following the three losses the team suffered from Jan. 3 to 13 against UW-Stevens Point, UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls.

    Saturday Eau Claire will take on UW-La Crosse at Zorn Arena. La Crosse is ranked seventh in the WIAC rankings, and Eau Claire is ranked fourth.
