Fraud

The University Police addressed a fraud complaint on Dec. 22 with a UW-Eau Claire male. He said a month ago he responded to an online job posting on the UW-Eau Claire Financial Aid board regarding a basketball coaching position.

The listing stated earnings would total of $400 with a rate of $50 an hour, according to the police report.

The man later received a $2500 check he was to cash and keep $400, then send the remaining amount to a travel agent. After cashing the check, his parents received notification that the check was fraudulent, according to the police report.

The man was informed to file a police report and not to communicate with the person again. The Eau Claire Financial Aid Office was contacted and told to remove the posting from the job board.

Under arrest

University Police conducted a random patrol on Dec. 7.  An officer observed a female subject in a vehicle that appeared to be in her mid-twenties.

The police followed the vehicle and a records check indicated the vehicle’s registered owner held an expired driver’s license, according to the police report. The emergency lights were activated and the cop initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. Three occupants were inside.

The driver told the officer she did not know her driver’s license was expired.

The officer then returned to her squad car and conducted a record’s check on all three occupants. The driver had no prior operating without a valid license offenses but a record’s check advised that the front seat passenger had two active warrants from Trempealeau County for operating without a valid license and speeding, according to the report.

The officer returned to the vehicle and requested the front seat passenger exit the vehicle. The man was informed he had two warrants before being handcuffed and taken into custody, according to the report.

The officer then wrote a citation for the driver for operating without a valid license and issued it to the woman in the car, while the man under arrest was then taken to Eau Claire County Jail.

Too much to drink

A Towers Hall North resident assistant contacted a University Police officer about a female found in the hallway on the third floor, semiunconscious and vomiting.

When the officer arrived he explained the reason for the visit and proceeded to ask the woman questions.

It appeared the woman was able to answer questions coherently and was not a safety risk to herself, according to the report. She knew her name, location and current president. The woman also said she knew she had too much to drink that night.

She submitted to a Preliminary Breath Test which revealed a reading of .13, with a weak breath sample.

The woman was cited for an underage alcohol consumption violation, according to the report.
