Emmett Mulrooney performing at The Cabin

This past Saturday, Sept. 24, during family weekend, the Cabin hosted three singer-songwriters. Students and their families came to listen to original songs and covers by Emm K, Emmett Mulrooney and Colin Bracewell. Each artist performed for about 45 minutes.

Emm K said she has been interested in music from a young age. She taught herself to play guitar after her kindergarten teacher played one in class. She eventually got into lessons and started playing for audiences at twelve.

Her Spotify account describes her music as indie, pop rock and alternative. She is also the lead vocalist for the“Bear Creek Band.”

Emm K describes her songwriting process as “chaotic.” Normally, lyrics come to her first. She will sometimes have to pull over on the side of the road and pull out voice memos when an idea comes to her.

“Whenever you have a thought of like, there’s no one else that feels this way. You know, I’m the only person that’s going through this. I want (listeners) to feel the exact opposite like, okay, somebody else has felt this way and been through this and it’ll be okay,” Emm K said about how she wants listeners to feel when listening to her music.

If she could collaborate with any artist, Emm K would like to work with the band Choke. She said she likes how their songs are upbeat with darker lyrics. Her favorite song of hers is “Heart on my Sleeve.”

Emmett Mulrooney is from Milwaukee. His music is described as “indie, bedroom pop sound” on Spotify.  Mulrooney said he often hears from his mom that he “sang before (he) talked.”

Similarly to Emm K, Mulrooney said he started playing music at a young age. He began taking piano lessons at 4 and guitar lessons at 10. At 12, he was playing at farmer’s markets and coffee shops.

“I just hope that (listeners) feel somewhat carefree and that they can relate in some way and bring it to their own life and just feel good when listening to music,” Mulrooney said.

Mulrooney said his favorite song of his is “Fool” but he really enjoys performing “She Likes My Style.”

“It’s just so fun live,” Mulrooney said. “It’s just the most fun, high-energy song.”

Mulrooney has 55,050 monthly listeners on Spotify and his top song “Sunset Wife” has more than 4 million listens.

Colin Bracewell, the last performer, is a senior at the University of Minnesota. He played saxophone in high school but he said he really got into music during his first year of college.

Bracewell described his songs as “good vibes wrapped up in sadness.” He often thinks of a  melody late at night, staying up to work on it before adding the lyrics. He gets inspiration for his lyrics from things happening in his life, like transitioning out of school as a senior or breakups.

Bracewell said his favorite song of his is his newest one, “Making Me Crazy,” and if he could collaborate with any artist he would pick Jeremy Zucker or Justin Vernon

Bracewell has over 1,000 listeners on Spotify. “Slopes,” his top song on Spotify, has 18,300 listens.
