The music scene in early 2000s Virginia was on the tail end of a pretty notable transition period. It used to be that, sonically at least, the state was lumped into the country and folk genres that consumed its neighbors further south.
But a new sound would soon take over, and just like the state of Virginia, it wasn’t quite from the East coast but it also wasn’t completely southern.
The duo of Clipse, raised in Virginia, recanted tales of the various illicit activities they engaged in before finding the microphone.
Producers like The Neptunes and Timbaland began to spread their influence as key contributors to a grimey yet idiosyncratic blend of gangsta rap.
