Shelby Banaszack of Sew Shelby was one of the local makers featured at the Night Market.

Locals were lured by tasteful tunes, a crackling campfire and the scent of sales as Volume One’s Local Store kicked off their fourth year of the Night Market on Friday.

From a fish flask and loose leaf tea to cozy hoodies and Bon Iver CDs, the Local Store boasted a wide variety of goods – which were all 15 percent off during the event. There was also a variety of products available for purchase outside of the store.

The Night Market offers more than just sales. Each Market also features a fire pit, free cider and food samples, an acoustic music artist and a food truck. Friday’s performer was Eduardo Rafael and the food truck was Netty Q’s. The lineup will change each week.

Matt Novacek, a Local Store employee, said the event setup was a long process. It involved calling the food trucks and performers, as well as reaching out to the makers to see if they’d return for the event. However, he said the work was all worth it in the end.

“We want to create an atmosphere for people to come together,” Novacek explained. “We just want to have more people hanging out, having a night out with friends.”

The store had a quiet but comfortable atmosphere as guests milled about. Some guests ventured out into the Local Store’s courtyard for the music and food, despite the chilly weather.

Stefania Draghicchio, a first-year psychology student, said the ambience functioned as encouragement to explore the shop.

“It’s a cool place,” Draghicchio said. “I like that you can watch the local artists and get to know Eau Claire.”

Going into the gallery, guests could see the featured makers’ wares as they wandered the store sipping on samples of Hikers Brew Coffee and munching on chocolate popcorn.

One stand featured Sew Shelby, which is run by Shelby Banaszack. Banaszack makes lanyards and keychains using patterned fabric, purchased at Stitch Supply Co. in Altoona.

For the most part, Banaszack sells her products on Etsy and social media platforms. She said she appreciates the opportunity to sell her products at the Night Market, and is proud that she can interest customers with her work, even if Sew Shelby isn’t her only source of income.

“I’m a teacher,” Banaszack said. “This is my side hustle.”

The Night Market is a “maker market and sale series,” and it will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. every Friday through Oct. 19. More information about the Night Market and the Local Store and Volume One Gallery can be found at their website.
