The 2017 action-packed film, “Baby Driver” is showing this weekend at the Woodland Theater in the Davies Center.

Written and directed by Edgar Wright, “Baby Driver” is an action movie full of meticulous robberies and high-speed getaways. The movie is set in modern day Atlanta, Georgia and focuses on a young man, nicknamed “Baby,” with a troubled past who now must risk his life to work as a getaway driver.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a highly skilled getaway driver who relies on his music to allow him to successfully complete a job. In his free time, Baby creates mixes of conversations he has with people and music he likes and saves them on cassette tapes. Though Baby is a part of an illegal organization he only does this in order to pay off his debt to Doc, a crime boss played by Kevin Spacey, as Baby once stole his car.

Each day is a new job with new criminals; Baby is looking for a way to escape from this life of crime. He unexpectedly finds this escape at a diner where he meets a waitress named Deborah (Lily James) and visits her there often, unbeknownst to Doc. The two try to escape with each other, but before they can, Baby’s boss finds out and threatens to ruin Baby’s life. In order to set things straight, Doc makes Baby drive for one more job. Baby must keep the things that mean the most to him safe, as this job has the potential to take away everything Baby has, even his life.

Baby’s playlist makes up the unique soundtrack for this film, and the music causes the audience to find themselves immersed in the fast-paced story. Some of the featured music comes from classic musical artists such as: The Beach Boys, Queen and Simon & Garfunkel.

Edgar Wright has directed other noteworthy films such as “Ant Man” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” The leading actor, Ansel Elgort, can be recognized for his work in the dramatic teen movie, “The Fault in Our Stars” and in the action-filled “Divergent” series. Leading lady, Lily James, starred as Cinderella in the 2015 live-action Disney film “Cinderella” and will be in the newest “Mamma Mia” film coming to theaters in 2018.

The movie has a rating of 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.7 out of 10 on IMDB. It has been highly popular with audiences both domestically and worldwide. “Baby Driver” was nominated for many awards, including a Screen Actor’s Guild, a Golden Globe and three Academy Awards. It won a Critics’ Choice Award for best film editing on Jan. 11, 2018.

“Baby Driver” will be playing at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 and at 2 on Sunday, Feb. 12 in Woodland Theater.
