The Channel Surfer: “2 Broke Girls”

As I am desperately awaiting the arrival of brand new TV seasons to air for this fall, I have stumbled upon some shows that aren’t particularly new, but are nonetheless pretty entertaining. This week I’ll take a look at a show called “2 Broke Girls,” which airs on CBS.

The show is based in New York, where two girls who are very different from each other work at a hole-in-the-wall diner. They become best friends while planning on starting up a cupcake business.

It’s a witty, crude, absolutely ridiculous show that will make you wonder how it is even allowed to air during the early evening hours.

I connected instantly with the most outrageous character, Max Black, played by actress Kat Dennings. Her character is not afraid to tell it like it is, and seems to believe sugar coating something is just stupid. It is what it is, and that’s that.

A lot of TV programs shy away from Max Black, and I admire how the show and its creator manufactured such a tough yet lovable character.

Many people might find her character and basically the whole show a little “too” excessive, but the same has been said about the show “New Girl,” and look how that program is doing (fabulously well).

In the very first episode, about 10 seconds in, I was literally face down in my pillow laughing. A man was snapping his fingers for the attention of Miss Black, and she calmly goes over, asks if she can get him anything while snapping her fingers right back at him.

The outlandish actions of her character and her constant witty comments make this show what it is. Her character is the essence of the plot and without her carrying the storyline, I don’t think this show would be any good.

Dennings herself is the perfect match for Black. I honestly could not see anyone else playing that character. Perfect casting makes for engaging TV.

The only qualm I have about the show is that whoever is in charge of the laugh track needs to stop. Right now. Stop it. I don’t know why, but this show has a lot of it. Word of advice to such producers: If the show isn’t funny already, then please don’t force it with creepy laughter.

If you need a show that will take you away from that looming deadline, or to break up your crazy schedule, or hell, just to keep you from doing what you are already doing, then watch a couple episodes of this show.

I can totally see how it would not be for everyone. The show is filled with socially inappropriate content, but aren’t most of your lives already that way? (Hey, college).

Now if you excuse me, I have to do some homework so I won’t be broke as a joke when I graduate. But maybe just one more episode.
