Junior pleads guilty in mail case, faces up to five years in prison

A 22-year-old UW-Eau Claire student pleaded guilty to stealing mail sent to Eau Claire students while working in Sutherland Hall, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin Stephen Sinnott announced Tuesday.

Junior Emily Thierfelder of Cedarburg pleaded guilty April 14 in U.S. District Court in Madison to obstructing correspondence, according to a press release from the U.S. attorney’s office.

Thierfelder worked in Sutherland Hall during the school year from September 2003 to March 2005. She admitted that for about two semesters she stole mail that was to be delivered to students.

The charges against Thierfelder were the result of a joint investigation conducted by the United States Postal Service and the University Police.
