The communication and journalism class Magazine Editing and Design plans to launch its online magazine “snap” today.
The magazine, which is made to benefit UW-Eau Claire students, is designed to “make college living a snap” and do it on a budget, said senior Hannah Holt, the online magazine’s editor in chief.
The magazine consists of three sections: living, socializing and surviving. The living section addresses living quarters and purchasing items to fill students’ living spaces. The socializing section focuses on Water Street and the survival section deals with stress, getting money and utilizing a budget, Holt said.
“It’s nice seeing it all come together,” Holt said. “We started from scratch.”
Although past classes of the course have put their magazine online, this is the first semester the class has focused on just having an online version of their magazine, said Andris Straumanis, associate lecturer of communication and journalism, who is the instructor of the class and acting publisher of the magazine.
Each member of the class contributes by taking on a different position on the magazine staff. At the beginning of the semester, Holt was chosen as the editor in chief. She then chose people to take certain positions depending on what they applied for.
“I lucked out as an editor … everybody’s really pulled through,” said Holt, who never had worked with the Web before the class.
Straumanis said the students in the class had to learn HTML, how a Web site operates and the online restrictions to make the magazine.
Holt said that initially preparing what the class needed to do was the most challenging part for her.
“It was my responsibility to make sure (the magazine) turned out,” she said.
Senior Stephanie Hora, managing editor of the magazine, said the class helped her to manage people and delegate work. Holt added that the teamwork aspect of the class will benefit each student in the class.
“It will help me be a leader in whatever job I do,” Holt said.
