City Council elections set for Tuesday; polls open all day

The Eau Claire City Council elections are set for Tuesday with the seats of council president and five other council members on the line.

Voters can vote for council president and one representative from their ward. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Council presidential candidate Howard White said he encourages students to get out and vote.

“If you don’t get out and exercise your right, you don’t have a right to crack about (the outcome),” he said.

Both White and Council presidential candidate Jane Tappen said if elected they would like to work with the community as a whole, including students.

“I really do believe in open, honest government (and) in community involvement,” Tappen said. “I’d like to see a lot more students stay in Eau Claire after they graduate.”

Likewise, White seeks stronger student involvement and encourages interested students to seek positions on neighborhood and city committees.

“My focus is on the city as a whole,” White said, “I’m taking a wide-range approach. We need to work with everybody.

“Everybody talks about having forums … I don’t see why we shouldn’t have forums with students,” he said.

Students wishing to vote need to register if they have not done so. This can be done wherever they go to vote.

On-campus students need to bring their campus ID with a sticker from their residence hall. Off-campus students need a picture ID and something such as a heating bill with their address on it.
