Bill addresses students with disabilities

A bill calling for changes to the bylaws regarding the Student Services Commission was introduced at the Student Senate meeting Monday.

Six members introduced the bill, which deals with students with disabilities at UW-Eau Claire. The bill says these students are “an integral and traditionally underrepresented part of the (UW-Eau Claire) population,” and “should be represented by Student Senate.”

Senate Vice President Kelly Witkowski spoke briefly to introduce the bill, which will be voted on at the next regular Senate meeting, which will be April 23 in Schneider 100.

“There have been a lot of issues, especially in the past year, that have been overlooked,” Witkowski said.

The bill said disabilities can include physical, emotional, mental and learning disabilities, among others. If passed, a students with disabilities chair will be added to the Student Services Commission.

The passage to be added to the bylaws is:

“Inform, educate and assist students with questions, concerns, and problems regarding disability issues, including, but not limited to, accessibility, education, awareness, and other services through the Students with Disabilities Chair.”

In other business, it was announced that due to some misunderstandings, applications for director of the Information and Technology Commission will be accepted until noon on April 18. The position is currently vacant. Any student can apply for the directorship.

Senate also voted two members to positions on Monday. Min Lee was the only person to accept a nomination for Senate’s United Hall Council liaison and was named to the position. Sarah Schuh was voted University Senate liaison.
