Artists make bowls to fight hunger

Bowls made by UW-Eau Claire art students are waiting to be filled with food for the hungry at Empty Bowls, a fund-raising supper this Friday.

The organization Feed My People will host the event to fight hunger.

Eau Claire art students are donating 100 handmade ceramic bowls to be sold at the fund-raising supper. Dinner is $12 with a handmade bowl and $8 without. For children 12 and younger the cost is $5. The dinner consists of soup, bread and dessert.

“The entire community is welcome to join in this amazing event,” said senior Erin Vanden Wymelenberg, who also is an intern for the Feed My People organization.

Feed My People is a food pantry that collects donations from Chippewa Valley businesses and individuals to distribute to families in need. They also assist local groups that coordinate events such as a community table that feeds the homeless.

The organization reached the Eau Claire campus last fall during Hunger Awareness Week.

Feed My People, along with the student organization Advertising Federation, set up various bins for donations. Hunger Week is a project that is done every year.

Also an intern for Feed My People, junior Angela Wood said she really enjoys the experience of working for the organization.

“It’s great to see the community get involved,” Wood said. “They realize that we’re not just selling stuff, but helping people.”

This is the first Empty Bowls project. The event has been done in different counties, but is being coordinated in Eau Claire for the first time.

“Empty Bowls is really a great event,” said Wood, who added she’s been involved in the event from its beginning and gets to see all of its progress along the way.

Wood said, as of now, the event’s organizers are expecting 400 people with all of the money made going straight to the community.

“This will really benefit the people in our area,” Wood said. “Eight dollars goes a long way and there are a lot of local people going hungry.”

Empty Bowls will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Community Table space at Hope Gospel Mission. Organizations donating the meal are the Acoustic Cafe, Bread Box and Deli, Great Harvest Bread Co. and Houligans.

Tickets are available in advance as well as at the door. For tickets in advance, call Feed My People at 835-9415.
