Student input needed on computing environment survey

If all goes according to plan, about 2,000 students will receive an e-mail next week containing a link to a survey regarding the student computing environment at UW-Eau Claire.

“Hopefully we’ll get it out by next week,” said senior Jeffrey Noe, director of the Information and Technology Commission.

Noe is making a few final changes to the survey, which will probably contain 25 to 30 questions ranging from feelings on lab hours to interest students have in being able to create their own Web pages.

“What we decided to do is create a survey more or less dealing with technology on campus,” Noe said.

He said James Lowe from Computing and Networking Services attends ITC meetings on a regular basis and called CNS the driving force of technology at Eau Claire.

“(CNS is) giving some input, too,” Noe said.

Noe said the commision will give the survey and then take a look at the results, which helps the members make a decision.

The survey will attempt to discover if students are aware of technology services available and whether they are helpful. It also will inquire about the CNS help desk.

“We’re just looking to see how we can improve some of these issues,” Noe said.

Lowe said he believes getting student input is beneficial.

“It will help us make informed decisions,” he said.

Noe said Web pages, which are available to students at some other universities, haven’t been discussed much at Eau Claire. But after the recent upgrade of student H drives from 10 megabytes to 50, it would be an easy step to take.

It would involve designating about 10 megabytes of space for the page, Noe said.

The link to the survey will allow students to respond quickly, and Noe is hoping for a strong response.

“I think we need at least 500 to 750 responses before we can start drawing conclusions from the survey,” Noe said.

Lowe said he believes student responses are a key element in making effective decisions.

“Any input students have will be welcome because we are here for the students.”
